Mar 07, 2009 – Recent surveys in US, UK and Australia have shown a very interesting finding when comes to strategies in fighting off economic downturn - contrary to what most people have thought, cost cutting initiatives such ash reduction in outputs or staff retrenchment are actually not really on the top list.
Right on the top of the list are price reduction to encourage more sales, adjust marketing costs, such as increasing spending on digital marketing instead of commercial TV broadcasting, but one area that was highlighted is increasing export activities.
US companies in particular have been stepping up their efforts to boost export opportunities - a good example is to see increasing number of State Offices setting up their Business Promotion Representatives offices across China, as well as sports franchises such as MLB and NAB all conducting exhibition games in China.
Although China is showing severe signs of slowing down in economy, it is still expected to report a 6% to 8% growth this year, their Government has projected an ambitious 8% growth for this year, still a big slow down compared to 11% growth achieved only 12 months ago. But any growth in today’s economy is still remarkable, and with its massive population of the middle class population and the fact that China has over 100 cities that has population over 1 million, it is a market not to be missed by exporters.

We have been asked by a number of mining companies to help them with Investor Relations lately, and one common problem we have found is the missing link between the company executives and their shareholders.
The company executives are usually very excited about their companies, passionate about the new drilling data and exploration results, but they are unable to communicate with their shareholders and investors at large, including analysts and fund managers,
This is what we call as a “missing link” problem – and is occurring to a lot of companies, including a large number of companies looking to raise capital from venture capital funds. I have met with a number of advisors this month and they have expressed their concerns that their clients are unable really explain what their businesses are in simple terms to venture capital funds, and some fund mangers simply walked off in 20 minutes.
So, these are the strategies we have helped our clients:
1. First create a shareholder newsletter if they do not have one yet.

Smart Franchise – Flight Attendants Turn into Fast Food Chain
Recently, my wife saw this business on an Asian TV Channel and I was very impressed by their ideas. 4 flight attendants were retrenched by their airline due to economic downturn, and unable to find any job for a year.
They turned around and set up their own restaurants near the airport – with some unique points: 1) They have to dress up in airline uniforms, 2) Fast service and they are pretty good because they are well trained 3) Thematic, as if you are in the plane 4) Near the airport where they have found good niche market including their former colleagues
I have seen many interesting retrenched employees turned around with fresh, may not be innovative, but fresh ideas enough to attract people. This particular restaurant is successful for a number of reasons:
1. Attract male customers – I don’t know the exact reasons – but in Asia, especially Taiwan, Japan, Korea – flights attendants are often associated as elegant, pretty even sexy. Male customers like girls in flight attendant uniforms, again, not sure about the psychology behind it, but it is certainly a selling point for this restaurant.

Canadian Capital Providers Guide is the latest Capital Providers Guide released by Money Cat Consulting (http://moneycat.biz). This is one of our latest reports added to our Capital Providers Guide series. This report provides a complete guide to Canadian Venture Capital Providers, Private Equity Providers, Debt Financing Providers and other Capital Providers; for the very first time, it also includes a number of Corporate Advisory firms which can assist you in capital raising.
The overall capital raising and venture capital market in Canada has changed significantly in 2008, especially towards 2nd half of 2008. The earlier focus on booming mining and commodities was impacted by the overall commodities correction in 2008, as the result of economic slowdown particularly in China. There has been a fundamental shift of capital from these sectors into alternative, CleanTech, Clean Energy sectors, which are still attracting significant capital from venture capital providers in Canada.
Technology remains as another sector that is still attracting a lot of interest and attentions from Canadian capital providers. In addition, given the low interest environment, many companies are also seeking debt financing instead of equity financing.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to meet with several people from recruitment industry. I went to visit a Sydney based recruitment agency called Kinetic Recruitment. Immediately when I walked into the door, I could feel the company is much more dynamic than other recruitment agencies, it has good lighting, and the meeting rooms are just outside the office where you can still feel and hear all the actions.
I don’t know about you, but when I went for interviews with some agencies, they often led me to those dark meeting rooms at the end of the corridor - I think that would make candidates nervous sometimes, that’s just my thought.
Kinetic is really different, I think it shows that any industry can do well disregarding the economy - and you have to make changes to adapt to the environment. When I was sitting in their open-reception area, I picked up their magazines with interest - all about defence, aviation, I am an aeroplane-addict, so I really enjoyed the magazines.
The company specializes in recruiting personnel in the defence industry, and what a smart move that is - in recession, lots of candidats want to get into defence, and governments worldwide have always topped up their military spending as part of economy stimulus plans - so this, will certainly help them.

Recently we had an interview with several skincare products manufacturers in Asia, as well as distributors, we have found many interesting findings. These findings will be very interesting to assist you to grow into these markets.
“One White Covers 3 Ugliness” – have you ever heard of this term, it may not sound correct grammatically, but this is a Chinese term that many Asians are familiar with. It shows just how important it is to have a fair skin in Asia, for those with darker skins, they often encounter unfair treatments in life, discriminated against in Asia, impacting on their social status.
We have heard, unbelievably, in this age – that many female candidates have been rejected in Asia at interviews for being too fat or the skins are too dark. We have heard this has happened in so many industries such as tourism, retail and many more. I have relatives being rejected for job applications for this reason, and what can you do when you hear such thing? She has good degree, good experience, speaks good English and her skin is just the way it is, and she has difficulties in finding jobs just because of her skin.

We have recently conductaed a number of surveys and interviews with Asian Venture Capital Firms and have found many interesting trends and also identified their interests in various sectors. They are really different from North American and European VC firms - which is hardly a surprise - and it also varies from market to market. Here are some of our key findings:
1. Australia - For many Australians - they will argue they are part of Asia, but from the Australian Government’s perspective - they are certainly trying to promote Australia is a key economy in Australia.
Australian VCs have similar investment principals and philosophies as in North American and European counterparts - but their demand are rather different.
Hot Sectors: Mining, Environmental, Biotechnology - biotechnology was a major sector, but somehow, many of opportunities have been “lost” to overseas VC funds. Australia is particularly strong in medical device, and this has attracted investments from Australian biotech VCs. Infrastructure used to be a major sector for Private Equity investments, but due to a relatively small economy of Australia - many Australian PEs are now investing in international infrastructure projects - with UK as their primary focus, but moving to Asia these days.
